VW to cooperate with QuantumScape on producing next-gen batteries in coming years
During the course of a press conference held in Wolfsburg on Wednesday, German automaker Volkswagen (VW) has revealed that it has plans underway to cooperate with its partner QuantumScape Corp. to produce next-generation batteries in the coming years.
According to the details shared by Volkswagen, the commencement of the trial production of solid-state batteries is scheduled for 2023.
In disclosing Volkswagen’s planned spending on electric-vehicle developments in the future, the company’s CEO Herbert Diess said at the press conference that, if the trial production is successful, Volkswagen and QuantumScape may start the production of solid-state batteries by the year 2024.
Volkswagen’s plans related to production of next-generation batteries are noteworthy, especially since the automaker is considering a 34 billion euros ($39.7 billion) investment by 2022, for developing technology for next-generation vehicles.
So far as Volkswagen’s partnership with QuantumScape is concerned, the automaker has taken a small stake in the 2010-founded start-up which is making significant efforts to develop technology that has the potential to lower the costs of electric vehicles and increase their driving ranges. QuantumScape’s efforts are currently focused on the development of batteries which use an alternative to liquid electrolytes, like the lithium-ion technology presently used in most electric vehicles.
