Elon Musk: Tesla has reduced production time of Model 3 battery pack by 94%
During the course of Tesla’s Q1 2018 earnings call last week, CEO Elon Musk said that the company has effectively streamlined the production of the Model 3 battery pack, thereby bringing about a 94% reduction in the time taken to produce the battery pack.
As a result of the substantially reduced Model 3 battery pack production time by Tesla Motors, the time taken for the production of the battery pack has come down to barely 17 minutes. Earlier, the Model 3 battery pack production took nearly 7 hours.
Musk said during the earnings call that the production rate of Model 3battery packs has improved significantly because of the company’s efforts to address the over-generalization of the vehicle’s design, along with excessive automation at the company’s Gigafactory in Nevada.
According to the details shared by Musk, Tesla Motors has been able to achieve “a rapid improvement in battery pack production” by eliminating some manufacturing steps, and cutting the time as well as cost of production. Musk specifically asserted that the improvement has ensured that the Model 3 battery production time has come down from “7 hrs to make a pack 3 weeks ago to under 17 minutes now.”
Musk also revealed that Tesla is “slightly ahead in battery module and pack production than expected” as the company has been able to “achieve a sustained rate of 3,000 vehicles a week.”
